Cross-Kultur Is Here, Like It Or Not
The recent months have seen a heated debate about the integration of immigrants into German society. The debate was fuelled by the German politician and former Federal Bank board member Thilo Sarrazin, who provoked with claims that Muslim citizens were not willing to integrate and would undermine the German society, or that “all Jews share the same gene.” While many Germans reject these remarks and react with initiatives such as “Demokratie statt Integration!” (“democracy, not integration!”), for others he is the one who finally dares to break an unjust taboo and say the truth
In her presentation, Gabriele Gün Tank will talk about the issue of integration in Berlin. The German capital is becoming an increasingly diverse city with people who are tolerant in terms of ethnicity, gender, sexuality, and religion. Still, people of color do not play a big role in the public administration, and the non-representation of minority groups remains a problem. What are the causes of discrimination, and which strategies do Berlin’s politicians implement
Mrs. Gün Tank will also address the dangers of racism voiced by leading public figures such as Sarrazin, as it encourages and promotes existing racist attitudes in the mainstream society
