The Social Economic Academy (SEA)

The Social Economic Academy (SEA) is a not for profit study institute that aims to promote alternative social economic structures in Israel. It provides lectures and courses to the public at large and to social activists in particular that are conducted by more than 470 volunteer lecturers. The SEA was founded in 2005 with branches in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Haifa and Beer Sheva.

Israel today is lacking a critical and coherent public social economic discourse, both in academia and in the general public. SEA is the only organization in Israel that offers a popular platform for such discourse. Through its lectures and courses, the academy provides the theoretical and critical tools needed to promote economic alternatives, and it creates an opportunity for people to engage in dialogue and to encounter different members of Israeli society. Furthermore, SEA encourages its students to become involved in actions that will lead to changes in social-economic policy.

The project "The Missing Public Debate on Social-Economic Issues" offers a critical discourse on socio-economic issues, creating an alternative public debate. Its activities are conducted nationwide and include seminars, a weekly column in a leading internet media outlet, media panels on social and economic issues as well as a series of movies and lectures on social economic issues, presented in public cinemas (“Cinemateque”). The aim of the project is to debate about and examine different social alternatives, which will then be put forward to be considered in the decision making process of social economic policies. The ensuing public debate is a central and relevant aspect in the process for social change.
